Today is July 4, 2012 and it was the most different July 4 I
have ever spent. For the past 38 years,
Bill has had to work most of the July 4 holidays. In Prescott we attended the Rodeo and I
really miss not being able to attend the rodeo this year. The most fun about the Rodeo is the attire of
the people in attendance. There is
usually everything from short shorts, to
what could be termed evening gowns. The
young men who fancy themselves as cowboys parade around with their newly
acquired ‘farmers tan’ and have giggling girls following them. Oh yes, and there are the obligatory cowboy
hats – probably purchased for the occasion.
One year David showed up at our home ready to go to the Rodeo. He had managed to get a buckskin jacket
replete with fringes and he had tight jeans, cowboy shirt, huge belt buckle
featuring a horse and yellow Mexican style cowboy boots. He had let his hair grow long and it curled
at the ends and he could have passed for Billy the Kid or Buck Rogers or some
other of the cowboys of filmdom and folk lore.
We were not invited to join any of the families here for 4th
July cookout or something, so we went to Ruby Tuesday’s for lunch, then over to
Kohls to buy a new shirt for Bill and then we went down to the church for him
to practice the piano. I took my
quilting with me and worked on the quilt while he played the piano. To get to the church, we had to go down I-95
to the Western Ave. exit then turn round and take the road past the Fed Ex to
Hallowell and then down to Farmingdale from there. The time was 4pm and we had to take such a
circuitous route to avoid the parade that was taking place in Augusta.
On the way home we discussed going to watch the fireworks
but it is a damp rather drizzly night and I do not really want to stand outside
in that weather to see the fireworks. In
any case, the air around our apartment is heavy with the smell of fireworks
being set off in the neighborhood.
We spent the evening doing something much more useful – we did
work preparing for the Family Reunion in Connecticut in a month’s time.
