A new picture gallery

This is the UM church in Oakland where we went to see the Messalonskee high school chorus concert.  Our friend Anne from the Archives is standing in front of the church.  It is a wooden building and is very very old and totally charming.  Inside it was superb and very ornate. Their minister is a Black Lady from Mississippi but she does not speak with a Maine accent yet.
We took a few minutes off to go to the museum which is housed in the same building as the Archives.  The title of the installation is "The American Home - circa 1950-1960.
My Grandma Eiser had a similar piano/organ instrument in  her home that I used to play with when I was a little girl.  I used to pump the pedals and then jump up to try to make the notes sing, but all I got was a dying gasp of sound because I was not strong enough to pump the pedals quickly enough or hard enough to keep air in the bellows.
These are tied flies for fishing.  I took this photo for Jacob to see.
Sara has a tub similar to this in her 100 yr old house.  What a find!
The white clothes washer in the background is similar to the one my mother used.  She was terrified of it and used it sparingly.  She was afraid that she would be electrocuted.
This is a small portable Typewriter.  My grandchildren will never get to use one of these.  It is similar to what I used up until we got a computer and then it became difficult to get ribbons for the typewriter.
This up to date item is a gramophone and I owned one of these when I was a child.  My gramophone was an ornate cherrywood thing that would only play 78rpm records and the needle that it used was thick and it stuck into your finger if you ever dropped the head on your finger instead of the record.  My favorite record was one by Spike Lee and his City Slickers with all the sound effects etc. that made me really happy.
This phone is exactly like the one we had up until  we left Johnstown in 1994.  Bill hated to toss it out but push button phones were coming into use and the dial phones just did not work well with the new updated equipment that the phone company had upgraded recently for our use and to accommodate the new faster push button phones.  Ahhhhhh! Technology.
This is our Christmas tree for this year.  It is rather pathetic looking but it is the best we could do with a hand-me-down tree.  I made the bows and  bought candy canes to decorate the tree.  It was a "pre-lit" tree which means that it came with the lights already firmly attached to the branches.
I love the number plates here in Maine.  This one features  a Loon which is a water bird that lives in this area.

  1. You can tell that I'm catching up slowly, but surely. Don't want to overlook any posts. Looks like a fun museum to visit. (Speaking of the old 78 records--I think you meant Spike Jones (Lee would be a different person). I use to love his records with the sound effects also.
