Tuesday was a blur – completely. We have to do these few books of Hancock County one page at a time. The first of these was ok because each page was numbered and life was sweet, but it took us most of the day to do ¾ of the book. When we do one page at a time we have to capture the left hand page first and then go back to the beginning and capture the right hand page. Sounds simple enough in the online instructions that they give us but practice is another thing. A few weeks ago we tried to do a right left capture and it got really messed up so we scrapped it and put it under the glass on the cradle. We totally wasted a whole day with this book only to have to scrap it. The main reason it was so difficult to keep track of the pages was that only the right hand page was numbered and they were numbered consecutively, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8, etc. rather than one side be number 1 and the other side be number 2 etc. the problem came about because we turned two pages at once and that is very easy to do because they stick together. AARRGGGHHHHHHHHH!
So we measured the bigger books that came with Hancock County and found that although they will fit under the glass, they are hopelessly out of focus on the top and bottom of the page while the middle is wonderful. Thus we had to put the cradle to sleep and put a board over the glass and then work with the books on top of the cradle.
Finally we decided we had had enough for one day so we left to go visit a church member only to find that she had moved and left no address. That happens a lot. I needed some potting soil and a pot for this little begonia that I have so we stopped in K-Mart and got that together and then went home. I had to hurry and make the dinner because we have Western Line Dance class at 6 till 8pm and we got home around 5.30pm. Dance class was ok. I am getting to know some of them but we never go dancing and I wonder if we will ever go dancing in Prescott? Probably not because the only places they do line dance is at the bars and pubs with screaming loud music and drunks. In any case, we are comfortable with this class and teacher and the music is not too bad to listen to. The only problem I have is with the turns – I lose my balance since I cannot see well and that is the result of macular degeneration. Age is not for sissies.
When we got home I was so tired from the Line Dance class and then we went food shopping on the way home, so we put the groceries away and went to bed. That was probably the only sane thing we did all day anyway.
It was so warm that we slept with our bedroom window cracked open – not intrepid enough to open it as far open as the local people open them. One of our neighbors has her window open all winter. She really likes the cold.
We woke up today (Wednesday) to about 30 degrees or less. Luckily we did not have to scrape ice off the windows. We got to the archives late only to find that we could not go through the search room because there was a bat loose in the room. They had to call someone to try to catch it – but the bat proved wilier than the catcher and he slipped back up into the ceiling through the air vent or something. Pretty soon we will have an entire zoo in the Archives – first squirrels and now a bat. Of course there were the usual jokes about bats in the belfry, going batty etc. but the overarching problem is the possible threat of Rabies if the bat is rabid. Well, we did not find that out today because he escaped.
We went to the YMCA before going home. It seemed busier than usual and the equipment gets a workout each day I am there to observe. There is a young boy who suffers from Autism who goes there regularly. He walks very fast for about 20 yards and then he takes off like a rocket and tears around the track for about 3 minutes and then he stops dead in his tracks and begins walking again. I love to see little kids at the YMCA. They are so tiny and cute. Today there was a really tiny little boy who was bald as a billiard ball and looked for all the world like Oliver when he was about the same age; Really big blue eyes and a charming smile for everyone.
When we came out of the YMCA it was snowing. It was snowing very lightly and of course after our run on over 50 degree days, the ground snow has melted and this stuff that fell today doesn’t have the ghost of a chance of laying on the ground and the municipal snow plough man can go to bed knowing that he does not have to be out at 2am plowing the roads ready for the day’s commute on Thursday morning.
