The native tribes in this area had a tongue twister language – especially for those of us of European heritage. In today’s paper there are loads of names and I am going to write them down so that I can remember that I really did go to a foreign mission even though it is here in Maine.
Togus – attributed with healing waters by the natives and now is the site of the oldest Veterans Administration hospital for veterans of the military.
Penobscot, Kennebec, Vassalboro, Cushnoc, Damariscotta (pronounced Damiscotta – they leave out the ‘r’ when they pronounce it), Skidompa, Maranacook, Mooselookmeguntic (name of a lake), Ripogenus (name of a Dam), Nesowadnehunk just to mention a few of the tongue twisters I have encountered here. Norridgewok is another name close by.
And I thought the Aboriginal names in Australia were tongue twisters.
