For sure I am back in the east. You can see the humidity in the air and I wonder if I should go out and buy a snorkel and goggles or just go the whole hog and get an aqualung?
It was so hot in the archives today that we were wilting with the heat and humidity. Turns out that Jeff was using the humidifier on the floor below to soften up some papers for processing. The director asked if the air conditioner could be set up and it was, but only for an hour or two and then it got shut off. I think I will opt to take out fan with us tomorrow so that we do not get so uncomfortably hot.
In many of the books there are scraps of paper that people have used as book marks. Some of them are scrawled with interesting hieroglyphics while others are directly lifted from the page. Apparently they were not important enough for the reader to keep them with him/her so they were left in the pages of the books.
We turned in 55 folders last week and one failed. That is not bad after two weeks of no reworks.
One of the things I have noticed in these books are the biblical names given the children. The only ones I have not seen are the names connected with the bad elements mentioned in the bible.
I went visiting teaching tonight. My companion lives across the hall from us and when I went over to ask her which of the conference talks we would be using, she lifted up her book and it was open at the same talk that I had been reading. We laughed at the fact that we both chose the same talk.
When we went to Hallowell to visit Rose, we found her outside burning papers in the chimneria (a terra cotta chimney type construction with a bowl at the bottom to put wood etc. into it to make a fire.) She had set chairs out so that we could visit with her outside. On the way home tonight from the archives, I had seen some ladies sitting outside on the grass in easy chairs and I thought to myself "How wonderful to be able to sit out and just visit. I never get to do that." And when we went to visit Rose, that is just what we did and it was so relaxing and wonderful.
When we came home tonight, Charles, who lives in the apartment below ours, was just coming home from work. He had taken off his shoes and I asked why and he said because it was hot. I told him that Hot is in Phoenix, - this state is just humid and not hot. I do not think he believed me. He is from Madawaska where it can get extremely cold - up by the Canadian border. Cold country people do not do well in heat.
