This figurine is a replica of the one on top of the State House. The niche was put into the wall to accommodate taking a coffin of a person from lying in state upstairs to the waiting hearse. the niche allowed enough room for the coffin to be turned the corner and taken downstairs. without the niche, no coffin could be carried downstairs - I wonder what they would have done then?
