The archives are not open on Saturday so we have a day off. We had decided to go to the YMCA to exercise and then leave to go to Bar Harbor and take a trip around the Arcadia National Park while there. We got out of bed early and set off for the YMCA. We have found a way to get there without having to go through 2 more of the roundabouts. Why they ever invented those things I will never know - you get in one and you might as well be the fellow on the MTA - he will never return and neither will we until we get to be just as brazen as the Main drivers and bully our way out of the roundabout.
We were congratulating ourselves on getting to be the first in the parking lot. We were first because we were about 45 minutes early and they were not open yet. Well the joke was on us to be sure but we made use of the time by going walking up by the Capitol and the Archive building. It was not a cold morning but it wasn't like Arizona either, but it was pleasant being out walking in the pre dawn. When we got back to the YMCA at about 7am, it was open and we were already warmed up for the exercise program of the day. As we were walking to the building, we saw a flock of Sea Gulls pecking the grass for worms or something. On Wednesday there had been a football game by two high schools in the field, and perhaps they were picking up the remains of the losing team? Who knows what the Gulls were eating. In any case, they are not afraid of humans and we walked right by them and they did not budge. Guess they are true New Englanders.
Our exercise program goes something like this - Bill works on the Torture Machines in the YMCA chamber of horrors machines, and I walk round and round on their indoor track. 21 1/2 times around the track is one mile and I find myself doing mindful walking on the track - means to me that I can walk without tripping over sidewalks, children,or other obstacles that I might encounter in Prescott where I love to walk with Andrea, and I can have a mind-full of thoughts while I cruise around the track. I end up lapping a lot of people who walk the track as well - perhaps my days of walking at 5500 feet above sea level pace is a lot faster at sea level? Who knows?
We left the YMCA and headed for home. Showered, ate breakfast and then read the paper. That turned out to be more than we needed to know - Moamar Kadafi was extricated from a drainage ditch and now is wandering around "the other side of the mortal veil" probably looking for the 75 virgins promised to each and every person in his belief system.............but in reality he is no longer a threat to any of his countrymen and is probably in a state of shock to see that post mortal existence is quite devoid of guns and bombs etc. I guess that tyrannical leaders are not insulated against death or immune to the court of public opinion which contributes to the uprising of their subjects whom they have oppressed, The wrath of the oppressed shows no mercy once they see the vulnerability of the oppressor. When Gadafi got to the eternal world, I wonder if they stood him in the corner for bad behavior on earth and he cannot come out to play until he learns the rules that govern such?
Also in today's offering of advertisements there was a flyer from Direct TV. They will provide TV and high speed internet (even on your I-phone) for $50 per month. We have been without TV now since early September and quite frankly I do not miss it. We have purchased a Hot Spot from Verizon for $20 per month and that works quite well. If we did take up Direct TV with their offer, we would have to go out and buy a TV and all the stuff that goes with same and when would we watch it? We are gone from early in the morning and come back in the early evening but we are so tired from all the stuff that we have been doing all day that we just get ready for bed (after I have written the blog for the day!).
Here in Augusta, there have been demonstrations against the War (all of them), government excesses, global warming, low pay for teachers etc. (all these things are written on placards that the demonstrators wave at you as you drive by) and this demonstration has resulted in a group of people occupying the steps of the Capitol each weekend and some even taking up squatting on the public park across the street from the Capitol. According to the paper, one man traveled all the way from Idaho to participate in the demonstration. He gave his reason as "I am a disaffected Tea Partier and came here to show support". Well, that IS a long way to come to show support! Unfortunately for them, the legislature is not in session and no one is at the capitol on weekends either. The futility of it all seems quite evident to me. Perhaps they could find some other more productive way to bring about change other than waving placards and making hand gestures to motorists passing by.....to say nothing about the unsightly collection of ratty looking tents and squatters on the capitol lawn. They call themselves "Occupy Maine".
Halloween is coming and many people have decorated their front lawns with all kinds of pumpkins and cobwebs and spiders and ghouls. We saw a pumpkin at Walmart that looked like it had been attacked by a hank of rope that had rotted in places and was now stuck to the pumpkin. Never seen that before.
Had a texting exchange with David. He is planning to move to Showlow in mid November. I asked him if he was getting a pet while there and he said yes. I asked what kind and he said perhaps a snake (I just hope that it is not a diamondback rattler). I told him that he should consider getting a dog or cat because it is hard to cuddle with a snake on a cold night. I never heard back from that one. Well, I suppose that if he got a boa constrictor, it would wrap itself around him and that might - just might- keep him warm???????
We took a trip to Bar Harbor Maine, but that will have to wait to be written up tomorrow. It is late and I have to get up early for church tomorrow................sorry about that. I have pictures too!
