Counting down by cleaning out the Freezer

So, we have had this side by side refrigerator in our home for almost 12 years.  It has housed the leftovers from various meals, housed fresh bought produce, frozen stuff in little sandwich bags with no identification along with a goodly supply of blueberries which I froze to be later put into from scratch blueberry pancakes.  I even found corn on the cob that we purchased from Young’s Farm and I froze some to be later enjoyed.  Youngs Farm has been out of business for about 4 years now, but I doubt the corn is able to be enjoyed.  Freezer burn will do that.
I found all sorts of things in my freezer side of the side by side, and it will all have to be eaten, given away or donated to the garbage can.  In the name of frugality, I carefully packaged up leftovers and put them  in the freezer for later consumption.  Later consumption will not come for some of these delectable leftovers due to changing diet habits, food needs, seasonal expectations and last of all, the leftover morsels are more expensive to keep frozen than to discard.   All sorts of  the un-eaten delights have been donated to the garbage can because they cannot be passed onto any friends who are helping me empty out the freezer.  Part of me balks at the thought of waste when so many people are going hungry, but the other side of my brain says that practicality should be observed and that I should not provide a safe haven for orphan foods.  Just think of the amount of plastic containers that are no longer employed by me in keeping leftovers safely frozen.
Piles of stuff are starting to appear.  These are not “I realize” type piles (I realize they are there and that they need attention), but rather they are piles of things that need to be given here  or donated there or packed ready to take with us.  One pile is my recipe books.  They are my friends in the kitchen but I cannot take them all with me so the arduous task is to decide which ones I will take.  Perhaps, for my own sake, the ones put out by Weight Watchers will win out – but my husband is convinced that these recipes are not filling or something and so I do not tell him that they are from WW…..and he eats well.  In another pile is my collection of M.A.S.H.   DVD’s which will be loaned out to a Mash-a-holic who loves the show and as a kindred spirit exclaimed………”Aaaah!  Bach” one day in my presence and we immediately bonded.  There is also a pile of stuff accumulating to take to the grandchildren whom we will visit on our way to the mission assignment.  They always love it when Grandma comes because the most wonderful stuff just spills out of her suitcase when she arrives.
A very specific pile of clothing is starting to accumulate on the bedroom floor in the corner.  These pieces of clothing are Fall Type clothes and some of them fit and some don’t;  so that is one more pile to go through.  We sure do accumulate lots of things in this country.
The up side of all this comes to a head when we arrive in our apartment that has been rented for us in Augusta, Maine.  I get to go to the store and purchase food to put in the freezer there – mainly so that I do not have to go to the store on a daily basis to buy food.  And that leads to another pile – a pile of cooking utensils etc. to take with us – and I won’t forget to  take the crock pot, blender and a sharp knife.
