The red bound books are of Oxford county and are older than the ones in the background which are from Penobscot county and are less that 100 years old. I guess the archivist nailed it when he said that the book binding jobs in earlier years was superior to later attempts.
the above two books show the metal binding and 5 posts that hold the pages into the book. Penobscot Co.
The canvas cover was falling off to reveal a fine leather binding underneath.
I walked down the back yard of the complex where we live to see if I could get to the river. I found these pieces of wood nailed to a tree and wondered if the "nailer" was intent on making a tree house or just mounting a spot to see the river..........who knows?
the Maine woods without the leaves. Although the trees are naked, it looks like I am looking through a loosely woven curtain to places beyond. You cannot see it, but there are houses at the distance.
I came upon this on the tree and wondered what kind of masochistic activity prompted them to put this stuff on the trunk of the tree. There is no place for a truck to get in here to pull the tree out by its roots or something. Really Kinky thing to find in the woods.
this small picnic area was a surprise that I was not prepared for. there is a pile of wood under that tarp in the background. If they get the snows they tell me they have, then who would be brave enough to come down here in the snowy winter and light up a fire. Probably too cold anyway and even though you made S'mores they would be frozen by the time you got them off the fire. they must have really strong teeth here to eat frozen solid S'mores.
If I was a visitor to this (next door apartment building) I do not see how I could park my car in this wilderness. I guess it is one way to discourage illegal use of the parking lot.....also to discourage visitors.
Sunday:
We went to church today and were asked to give talks. My subject assignment was "Why I went on a Mission." Bill's assigned subject was "Missionary Work in the church".
In my talk I outlined by approach to this missionary assignment. I consider my assignment as a privilege to be asked to be of service to my fellow man - particularly those people who are researching their genealogy in the state of Maine.
We received a request from our supervisor to outline for him what our goals will be for the coming year. Well, we will do ok if we do not get any re-works.
So on with the show..............tomorrow is Monday and we go again to the archives to work with the "Beast".
